Therapeutically Applied Dungeons and Dragons

Three Groups
Rising 6-8th Grade
Rising 9-12th Grade
Young Adult

  • This group is a fantastic resource for teens and young adults who could work towards:

    • increasing social skills

    • decreasing anxiety (social or otherwise)

    • increasing ability to collaborate with others

    • improving cognitive flexibility/decreasing rigid thinking

    • improving impulse control

    • improving executive functioning skills

This group is great for people who experience social anxiety, or have different neurodivergencies such as ASD, or ADHD, although it can be beneficially for a larger population

  • This group will meet weekly throughout the summer aside from some breaks. We will meet in person. No experience is required and Evan will provide all materials (but if you have your own dice/preference on character sheets, please bring those!)

The initial sessions will focus on character creation, and collaborative world building.

Then the group will form a party of adventurers and work together on a quest that they’ve helped to create.

  • This group will be facilitated by Evan Forster, LCSW. It will be cofacilitated by Barkley, Evan’s therapy dog.

Evan is a certified therapeutic game master utilizing the game to grow method. Click the prior link to learn more about Evan’s training, and the therapeutic application of role playing games.

  • Q:Do I need to have played before?

A: Not at all, it’s expected that many members have no playing experience.

    Q: Does this replace therapy?

A: No! This group can enhance your therapeutic skill set and if you are currently in therapy. However, it does not replace psychotherapy. This group works great in conjunction with individual therapy.

Q: Do I need to attend all group sessions?

A: No! It’s summer time and travel happens. However, some of the magic of the group is creating relationships with group members, so attendance to as many groups as possible is encouraged.

Q: Dungeons and Dragons as Therapy, how does that work?

A: Great! Currently more and more research is being done on the impact and effectiveness of utilizing this method as a theraputic tool. Further information can be found here.
